Set Idiomas (Córdoba)
October5th, 2006
Located in the business and tourism hub
On Thursday October 5 2006 www.spanishcourses.info was received by SET Idiomas in Córdoba. We were met by Catherine, who is in charge of the Spanish programs and the Set volunteer groups, and also by Eduardo Trucco, the Director.
SET IDIOMAS is located in the business and tourism hub of downtown Córdoba city, in the Corrientes street, and only two blocks from the historical city center.
Catherine introduced us to the teachers and the work team.
We met Matías and Macarena, who work in administration, and the full teaching staff:
Silvina Andrea Morales, Florencia Ávalos, Natalia Latosinki, Susana Hamah, Susana Beker, Mercedes Aliaga, Daniela César, Sonia Barbero and Andrés Iglesias, all of them university graduates and expert professional teachers of Spanish as a Second Language.
We spoke to them and listened to their projects and suggestions.
We discovered a busy and expanding language school, with a roomy, comfortable and modern infrastructure.
There are 8 classrooms, a bar, two kitchens, a reception area, a yard and a large roof terrace used for hosting events.

“voceo” and the “tuteo”
In the classes they teach both the informal second person Spanish styles of
address: the "voceo" and the "tuteo" (the use of 'vos' and 'tu' as 'you').
As Catherine tells us: "We work with a combination of books, mainly Nuevo Ven, El Planeta and El Rápido Rápido, and we always add special exercises and reading materials from our well-stocked library. Besides, we have created an academic area to guide our work, supervise our teachers and prepare our own materials.
Obviously this work, if seriously undertaken, will take some time to complete.
At our school many students have undergone preparation for the DELE and CELU exams, passing them with excellent results.
We have also purchased a collection of classic Argentine films. Our library is being constantly expanded and upgraded."

Lodging options in Córdoba
SET Idiomas offers a variety of lodging options, almost all of which are a stone's throw from the school (students can come to classes on foot).
There are family homes and shared apartments with Argentine students. The school solves any problems that may arise, and can provide alternative lodging for any unsatisfied student.
We went to see "PeperinaHouse", a student residence providing containment and a family atmosphere as well as opportunities to practice Spanish.

SET Idiomas Activities:
The school offers permanent activities (the City Tour, the visit to the Che Guevara Museum, the tango class including 'empanadas' (a local meat pie delicacy), sail-boating and weekends at the Sandañil 'estancia'
including short horse treks and riding excursions.
As well as its own activities, the school offers programs of adventure tourism led by well-known local tourist guides, such as the Martín Avila trekking trails, horse-riding, paragliding, parachuting, etc. All these activities as well as the daily living expenses in Córdoba are easily affordable to any budget.
We deal with all our students on a first-name basis, whether they be Dutch, Belgians, U.S., Germans, Australians, Swiss, Swedes, and even the stray Hungarian, and they all enjoy our personalized family atmosphere.
No fewer than 20 foreign students a month register for our classes.

SET Idiomas shows its city ...
In view of the visit by www.spanishcourses.info to SET Idiomas, Catherine and Carlos (our coordinator of extracurricular activities), prepared a wide-ranging itinerary.
Here we will show you some of our impressions and the photos of the excursions we were taken on.
First, we toured the Córdoba city center that combines this city's business and cultural life and its historical tradition. The city was built on a colonial plan around the San Martín Plaza. On one side lie the Cathedral and the Cabildo (the original city hall), and at the corner one enters a long pedestrian street extending for several blocks, that always fills up with shoppers and sidewalk cafe patrons.
A strange fact about this city is that one out of ten of its inhabitants is a university student. Young people flock to study in Córdoba from all points of the country, giving it a strikingly youthful character.

Learning Spanish on an “estancia” (local cattle ranch):
Alta Gracia and the low sierras:
Only 34 Km from Córdoba, we visited the city of Alta Gracia, where 'Che'
Guevara lived in his childhood and early youth. The Museum that has been created in the house where he lived provided an inspirational visit. After that, we visited the Jesuit estancia of Alta Gracia that forms part of a group of estancias that have been included within the buildings that the UNESCO has classified as part of 'Humanity's Heritage', giving us a rough idea of what colonial life was like in Latin America.
After a juicy beef sirloin at a restaurant facing the 'plaza', we left for the Sandañil estancia where horses awaited us and we were greeted with a cup of tea.
Sandañil is a 200-hectare estancia in the heart of the low sierras. The stone ranch-house is impressively roomy and tastefully decorated with antiques. Each of its rooms has a different theme-tone color scheme.
During our horse trek we noted that the hilly part of the property retained its character of unspoiled wilderness. We were impressed by the number and size of the 'algarrobo' trees, highly valued for their usefulness by the natives. I was assured that one of the specimens was over 500 years old, making it predate Columbus' 'discovery' of the Americas.

Practicing Spanish with local inhabitants while TREKKING:
Very early the following morning, we left with Martín Ávila (A Licensed Guide approved by the Provincial Registry of Alternative Tourism Service
Providers) on a very different type of excursion – a fun trip through the Quebrada del Condorito (Small Condor Gully) National Park, where we not only enjoyed some small waterfalls (the 'five falls'), but also climbed rocks, and crossed grasslands, rivers and gullies.
This excursion, brimming with fun and entertainment, is available to SET students every week. You have to have your camera ready at hand, because you are bound to come across many different animals in the park, and may even see some mountain lion (cougar, or locally 'puma') prints. Martín showed us a very beautiful flower that as it grows turns into a very prickly vegetable, locally known as the 'mother-in-law's armchair'...
In the evenings one can enjoy a very close fly-past of a flock of Condors, a truly amazing experience.

Spanish “Afloat”:
One can also sail in Córdoba, which has several lakes. Only 40 km away from the city, Lago San Roque extends lengthwise for 20 km.
There the school has its sailing boat, the 'Delfín' (Dolphin), and we went sailing in it for over two hours. On the south shore of the lake lies the tourist resort city of Villa Carlos Paz. On the lakefront there are beautiful beaches, houses and hotels.
SET IDIOMAS, "a synonym for language tourism, culture, professionalism and personalized care for your every need. Here you can learn Spanish in a comfortable, fully equipped classroom or else by doing sports, taking excursions, or learning about and enjoying one of Argentina's most welcoming provincial capital cities".
If you choose to study Spanish in Córdoba, your best bet is SET IDIOMAS, where you will be certain to enjoy a unique and unforgettable experience.
