The Interdisciplinary & Multicultural Institute at the University of Puerto Rico sponsors this summer program, designed to increase participants’ ability to communicate in all aspects of the Spanish language and provide them with an understanding of Puerto Rican cultural patterns.
In addition to traditional classroom instruction, weekly field trips, workshops and cultural activities are built into the program to enhance learning and to allow students to become better acquainted with some of the most important features of Puerto Rican culture. Optional trips & cultural activities are also offered.
Courses
SPANISH FOR NON NATIVE SPEAKERS 5 levels: basic 1-2 intermediate 1-2 & advanced. Placement in these courses is subject to our placement test. Courses are designed to integrate students’ cultural experiences, & develop all aspects of the language
PUERTO RICAN LINGUISTICS & LITERATURE For advanced Spanish students only. Overview of the Spanish language in Puerto Rico & the Caribbean & introduction to island literature
SOCIETY & CULTURE IN PUERTO RICO Conferences, workshops, field trips & cultural activities are integrated to provide an overview of island culture (society, art, ecology, etc)
Fees & Application
Students may choose to take only a Spanish course (including the linguistics & literature course) or both Spanish and Society & Culture in Puerto Rico.
College credit optional.
Fees include courses, extracurricular activities & field trips, certificates, medical insurance, dorm housing, breakfast and lunch vouchers for school days, airport transportation, course materials, & use of campus facilities. Students registering after June 1, 2005 will be subject to a late fee of US, in addition to regular course prices. Contact us or visit our site for an application packet.
Room & Board
On campus dorm housing is available and included in the program fee. Alternate housing options, such as home-stay, hotels, and short-term rentals may be arranged for an extra fee.
Home stay opportunities are severely limited. Students interested in a home-stay are encouraged to apply early. Food vouchers are redeemable at many on-campus food concessions.
Financial Aid
As part of INIM’s commitment to students who wish to participate in the Institute’s programs, we offer scholarships and other financial aid to help defray the cost of the programs.
This year we have scholarships available for teachers, librarians, foreign (non-US) students, and researchers. More information about these scholarships is available through our site and on our application packets.
The University of Puerto Rico was founded in 1903 as a public institution of higher education. It is a system composed of eleven campuses and other institutional units administered by a president and a board of trustees.
The Río Piedras campus is located on a 289 acre area north of San Juan, the capital of the island.
This campus is the largest in the university system, not only by population but also by its academic offerings.
It is within walking distance of downtown Río Piedras and easily accessible by public transportation.
