Formerly the Republic of Equatorial Guinea was the Spanish colony of Spanish Guinea. The country became independent on 12 de octubre de 1968.
The country's territory (continentally known as Río Muni or Mbini) includes a number of islands, including the sizable island of Bioko where the capital, Malabo (formerly Santa Isabel), is located.
Its post-independence name is suggestive of its being situated near both the equator and the Gulf of Guinea.
Only country in Africa where the official languages is Spanish
The Republic of Equatorial Guinea is the only country in Africa where one of the official languages is Spanish (The other one is French).
By its constitution Equatorial Guinea is a democracy, but in reality ruled by the dictator Teodoro Obiang Nguema.
Due political issues and for common health reasons it is actually recommended NOT to travel to Equatorial Guinea.
