Originally inhabited by the Guanches, the pre-Hispanic inhabitants of the Canary Islands, the area of Santa Cruz de Tenerife was conquered by Alonso Fernández de Lugo in the year 1494 for the Spanish Kingdom.

The strategic location of Tenerife on the route between the Mediterranean Sea and the American continents caused that the city was attacked several times by the English and the Dutch navies, but also pirate attacks ensured that life never became awfully boring.

Fortresses and castles like the Castillo de San Juan Bautista or the Castillo San Andrés are witnesses of these periods until today.
