Montevideo (Uruguay) - Things to See:
Cultural life in Montevideo is intense and has a great variety
Cultural life in Montevideo is intense and has a great variety of offerings. However, did you also know that the city is home to many first-class singers and musicians of all styles? Did you know that the city has both an official and independent theater circuit with shows all year-round?
One of the best-known theaters is the Solís which was recently restored and is one of the very first to have been in Latin America. In the old part of town, you will find a large number of cultural centers and museums, with new painting and photography expositions all the time. You will also be able to admire the numerous Candombe and Carnival shows in the street, the latter in February and the former all year-round.
Parks & Activities
All these wonders are complemented by big parks which are used for cultural events, book fairs, markets or the Montevidean Carnival, which last more than 40 days.
Tango in town ...
The three most important types of typical music on the Rio de la Plata are tango, Milonga and Vals Criollo. Many memorable melodies originated in Montevideo.
El Tango supremo, La Cumparsita, la Milonga La Puñalada and the Vals Desde el Alma were componed by Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, Pintín Castellanos and Rosita Melo, all from Montevideo.
The importance of Tango becomes clear when you check out the different bars, restaurants and milongas of the city. Since 1935 the 'Fun Fun' Bar has been one of the most important places for Tango in town.
That’s where the Uvita was invented, a mix of Port wine and regular wine. That’s also where Gardel sang a capella in 1933 and people have been dancing and listening to Tango music for the past 70 years in this bar. 'El Farolito' is another important place for Tango lovers, in the old part of the city.
Low lights, good sound and great dance floor attract many amateur and professional dancers. Apart from other Tango bars like 'Joventango', 'Café Las Musas', 'Garufa' and 'Vieja Viola', you can also enjoy the spontaneous music and dance in many public squares and parks at sunset.
