Denia (Spain) - Things to See:
20 kilometres of coast.
Denia has 20 kilometres of coast. To the north, fine sandy beaches; to the south rocky, precipitous beaches, such as Las Rotas Beach, which has a great many small coves and areas of great beauty.
Every year these beaches are awarded the European Union blue flag, which is only given to clean and well equipped beaches.
Passing of civilizations
The area evokes previous times and cultures which remind us that Dénia has been ruled by the Moors, Romans, Carthaginians and Iberians.
As proof of the constant passing of civilizations we now enjoy the examples of architecture which have been left, the best of which is the magnificent castle overlooking the town.
HOW TO GET THERE
The town of Dénia has good road and rail communications. You can take exit 62 (Ondara) on the A-7 motorway, the national road N-332 runs close to the town. A narrow-gauge railway connects Dénia with the provincial capital, Alicante. Benidorm is only 58 Km. away.
So that you have a real idea of where Denia is positioned you can find us equidistant at about 100 Km from both Alicante and Valencia Internacional airports.
By boat, there is a daily service to the Balearics ,or such cosmopolitan islands as Ibiza, such beautiful places as Palma de Mallorca or Menorca and not forgetting the very peaceful island of Formentera and many other suchlike islands.
GASTRONOMY
Denia has been and is a port. When walking you can see the very old district and by the port you can find the fish market.
It is being a fishing port that has clearly influenced the delicious dishes of the area and from where the gastronomy has evolved.
The main undisputable ingredient is rice in many different and elaborate forms but the most famous is without doubt paella. The most typical dishes of this country can vary from shell fish and fresh fish, to vegetables and dried fruit .
Rice ...
The dish most frequently served in an Alicantan kitchen is rice, cooked in many different ways(more than 300 ways are recorded):
- Paella (fish, meat, vegetables or a mixture)
- A banda (cooked in a clear fish soup and strained)
- A caldero (moist, served before fish))
- La olleta (with vegetables, pulses and stuffed)
The fish and shellfish of the bay with the fruit and vegetables from the markets, accompanied by the home produced wines make the food both natural and healthy.
Also there are excellent beef dishes, lamb chops, rabbit in garlic and tomato and leg of lamb with various stuffing from the region.
