Churros
Another important thing is to taste the exquisite Churros (fried strips of dough typically served hot and sprinkled with sugar or covered with chocolate and filled with the Typical Argentinian Dulce de Leche).
Mataderos
Mataderos is one of the districts of Buenos Aires, one of the oldest. It has been home (since 1860) to Buenos Aires’ largest cattle market. As happens with most markets, it has also been a meeting point, a place where customs, beliefs and traditions are created and shared.
One of the buildings in the Mataderos district is the National Cattle Market, inaugurated in 1890 and declared a historic monument. Its architecture is purely Spanish and its typical pink color has been maintained (by the way, in 1890 this color was obtained by mixing animal blood with lime). It also has one of the last “miradores” in Buenos Aires, used to watch and prevent cattle thievery.
The southern part of Buenos Aires is interesting because it has maintained the working class panorama of the late 19th century. The Boca district is intimately linked to the port. Barracas was home to the first English railyards. Add to this San Telmo and the Abasto, but Mataderos is key to understanding the cultural roots of Argentina.
The central interest of the market today is not only the exhibition and sale of crafts and products, but also the reproduction of the conditions of traditional argentine craftsmanship.
Mataderos fair
The Mataderos fair is divided in three parts:
- stands of craftsmen of different indigenous origins, with their foods, fabrics, musical instruments, silverware; craftsmen specialized in knife making (formerly used to slaughter the cows), boots, belts, handbags and other leather products. All foods from everywhere around the country: asado, locro, tamales and empanadas.
- gaucho shows including “rodeo” type activities
- folklore shows of the different communities of the north, of Mesopotamia, the center and the Cuyo region. There are different regional festivals with local artists, craftsmen and products of each zone.
Traditional Fair of Argentine popular handicrafts tradition
For ten years Buenos Aires has enjoyed its criollo Sundays in the traditional Fair of Argentine Popular Handicrafts and Traditions, the Mataderos Fair, 'a site where countryside and city merge'.
It offers a wide range of traditional, indigenous and criollo handicrafts made in silver, wood, knitted fabric, ceramics, etc. The visitor may also enjoy a folkloric festival of music and dances, admire innumerable gaucho skills where the pato national game, the carrera de sortijas (racing on horseback the rider hast to try and string at the end of a spear or lance a ring that is hanging from a ribbon at a certain height), the pulling of reins and trimming competitions are sure to be seen.
At the Recova, tempting stands of regional meals offer a wealth of choices, among which the most traditional are locro (corn stew), tamales, typical empanadas, alfajores, tortas fritas (fritters) and mate cocido.
