Oviedo
Oviedo is the capital of the Principality of Asturias and is the administrative and commercial centre of the region.
The city’s central area is 227 meters high above sea-level, protected from the Northern wind by Mount Naranco. In the South you'll find the Aramo Range.
Well-defined cultural character and good customer service.
Oviedo is remarkable for a well-defined cultural character wrought through the centuries.
With high quality and good customer service in mind, Oviedo aims to provide a wide variety of restaurant and accommodation choices capable of meeting your most exacting demands.
Small city, but a beautiful, clean, and safe city.
Oviedo is a small city of 210,000 with history (it is not one of the oldest in Spain, but its foundation dates to 761), with a very interesting casco antiguo, neighborhoods to take walks through, a beautiful park and a mountain nearby (mount Naranco), with an enormous stone statue of Christ which can be seen from afar and from which it is possible to see the entire city.
It is a beautiful, clean, and safe city.

Premios Principe de Asturia
The most important public event in the city in the course of a year is probably the ceremony of the famous Premios Principe de Asturias. The awards are given by prince don Felipe de Borbon, his wife doña Letizia, and the queen doña Sofía. Some of the people who have won this prize have been Woody Allen, Arthur Miller, Barbara Hendricks, Vittorio Gassmann, Umberto Eco, Jano Goodall, Craig Venter, Lula da Silva (president of Brazil), Daniel Barenboim, Edward Said, Joanne Kathleen Rowling, the Brazilian football (soccer) team, Lance Armstron, Fernando Alonso, Steffi Graf, Carl Lewis...
This is only a small selection since the award has existed since 1981 in the areas of Comunication and Humanities, Social Sciences, Art, Letras, Scientific and Tecnical Investigation, International Cooperation, Concordia, and Sports.

Fernando Alonso and the soccer club Real Oviedo
Another reason that Oviedo has been 'in style' lately is because it is Fernando Alonso's 'patria chica' (native region) Fernando Alonso is the youngest Formula One world champion in history. We hope that he will gain that title (world champion) many more times.
Oviedo has a football (soccer) club, the Real Oviedo, that had a place in the First Division of the Spanish League and now fights to regain that position from the second division (B) it curently finds itself in.
Its descent is linked to the creation of a new stadium, the Carlos Tartiere.
The Real Oviedo already has a First Division Stadium; now it merely has to gain the position that corresponds to it, and this is sure to happen in the next few years.

Cultrure: Opera, Zarzuela & Jazz
Oviedo already has an opera season and another of Zarzuela. Zarzuelais the lirical/dramatical genra typical in Spain.
An opera in the Spanish tradition with a long tradition (Lope de Vega already wrote dramas for the zarzuela in the XVII century). Both celebrations ocur in the Campoamor theater, a nintenth century coliseum that has its most prestegious literary aperance in La Regenta, the work of the Spanish writer Leopoldo Alas Clarin, without a doubt the most important author in the ninteenth century next to Benito Pérez Galdós.
In adition to the Campoamor theater, te other great musical center in Oviedo is the Principe Felipe auditorium of recent construction.
In Oviedo's culture it is important to mention the Jazz festival, one of the many that is celebrated in the summer in all Spain and that is aquiring more prestige as the years go by.

Oviedo is today an increasingly more modern city.
However, Oviedo is today an increasingly more modern city. Its rank burgoise society has modernized since then and, if there is some reduced remnant of that old caste, it has been crushed by the changing times, by the new blood, and by the numerous visitors that many times make Oviedo their home for a time, or for life. If before there were only Asturian restaurants and 'sidrerias' (which, on the other hand is not bad as they offer a delicious cuisine, good service, and a great atmosphere), now we have libanese, indo-pakistani, other japanese, italian, and french restaruants. The Universtiy of Oviedo plays an important role in Oviedo's atmosphere and gives it a more cultured and interesting profile.

Shopping
Oviedo is a good place to go shoppings.
People fill the streets in waves with their Zara, Alfonso Domínguez, El Corte Inglés, and other famed buisnes's bags.
Many of these people stop afterwards in some terrace to take some coffe, some wine, some beer, or a 'pincho' (small baggette sandwiches usualy sold for one euro).

Leisure time ...
Oviedo has many sport centers where one can do sports or stay fit.
The parque de Invierno is a marvellous place to walk, get some air, take out the dog, or go jogging through its many kilometres between trees.
To all the city's attractive characteristics we must add the proximity of Gijón, a city that changes drastically in the summer and takes in thousands of tourists, a huge and crowded beach, a festival dedicated to 'novela negra' (detective novels) called 'Semana Negra', and one of the most prestigious film festivals in Europe, the Gijón film festival, many nocturnal bars and a great nightlife next to its muelle deportivo and its casco antiguo.

City of congresses and trend-setting in architecture
On 3rd March of 2008, the Conference Centre Princess Letizia was inaugurated, a creation by SANTIAGO CALATRAVA, the Valencian architect of international fame. With a central part in conch form, perhaps in honour of the centuries-old symbol of the pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, and an exterior part in U-form, this building aims at being a sign of vanguard and setting a new course in the international architectonic panorama.
Thanks to this centre and the numerous hotels and hospitality infrastructures which were built in Oviedo in the last time, the city awaits a bright future in the congress industry. This sector is highly compatible with its traditionally strong economic branches: trade, hospitality, university education, health care and its role as the Principality of Asturias's administrative seat and as domicile of numerous highly qualified experts.
